Balboa Park will transform into an open-air stage on May 10 as San Diego-based arts nonprofit Project [BLANK] presents the U.S. premiere of “Park Opera,” a free outdoor performance reimagining the traditional opera experience.

From 4 to 7 p.m., audiences can explore the park on a self-guided journey enhanced by music, visual art and movement, with a map leading them through various interactive installations.

Created by Polish composer Wojtek Blecharz, “Park Opera” has previously captivated audiences in Poland, Germany, and Austria, according to the nonprofit.

“We work hard to break down barriers in the artistic space,” Project [BLANK] Executive Director Leslie Ann Leytham said. “Bringing opera outside of the traditional spaces and into our parks, free of charge, allows all San Diegans to enjoy a cultural experience in a welcoming environment whether this is their first opera or their 100th.”

While the event is free, registration is encouraged at etix.com. The event’s “lobby” will be located near the Moreton Fig Tree in Balboa Park.
